Water – Could You Be Dying Of Dehydration?

dehydration could it be killing you?
Dehydration and Death

The link between dehydration and death is well known. On average if water is withheld from a person, you can expect to die within 3 days although there are people who have been known to have survived 10 – 12 days without water. My guess is that those people were more hydrated before the withdrawal began.

But what about you – are you dehydrated?

What is less well-known is how average people like you and me are dehydrated and how we have lost touch with our internal thirst messages. We mistake messages of thirst for hunger and reach for another sugary snack when our brains, hearts and digestive systems are crying out for water.

Soda Pops and Coffee are dehydrating….

Many people are addicted to soda pops and other caffeinated drinks that create dehydration rather than hydration.
Did you know that a cup of coffee can cause the body to lose up to three cups of water? Caffeine is a stimulant that has an effect on the cardiovascular system, increasing heart rate and blood pressure. This causes the renal system to have a higher volume of blood to filter resulting in a higher waste output. This is why you may have noticed that coffee will cause you to urinate more – it is a diuretic.

How much water to drink?

Our bodies are made up of approximately 60% water and every system depends on water to function.

The Institute of Medicine recommends that men drink 3 liters of water per day and that women drink 2.2 liters of water per day. The level of chronic diseases being suffered by people in America, and other Western nations would be exponentially less if people follow these guidelines.
My experience is that the average person doesn’t even drink 1/3 of this volume. Also foods high in sugar, fat, caffeine and chemical additives are extremely dehydrating. Almost all the people who have consulted me over the past decade have been dehydrated and it is a much bigger problem than most people realize.

I am sure you know you are not drinking enough water, so today is the day to change that.

What kind of water should you be drinking?

Let’s get this straight, just get drinking water, worry about the specific qualities of water as a secondary consideration. I am very keen to educate you on the different types of water and what is best for our cells but I am pragmatic – when you are not drinking enough, simple tap water is better than no water.

The points that stood out for me in this book is the connection between dehydration and stress, inflammation, allergies, hypertension, blood cholesterol and excess body weight.

The damage dehydration causes…..

When cells don’t get enough water, they become damaged and this damage lays down the foundation for many chronic conditions that only manifest themselves after years of drought. Our bodies are self-surviving mechanisms and the body will hold onto water if it is in a state of dehydration. The walls of the cells have become thickened with cholesterol in order to hold onto fluid. This is the connection between cholesterol and hypertension and dehydration. When cell walls are thick, the nutrients don’t get through easily creating a further issue of malnutrition.

When I work with a person who is overweight I start with the point that we are dealing with malnutrition and dehydration. A biofeedback assessment will determine just how stagnant a person has become. My mission is to get them back to “free flow” where all the organs, tissues and cells are flowing in the way that they were designed to flow. In doing this, all their health challenges including the weight issue will be resolved. By resolving dehydration, many emotional issues are resolved too because as the cells start to work more efficiently and the body can detox, it is ridding the body of the negative emotions stored in cell memory. The place to start when desiring to lose weight is firstly identify the fluid intake levels and then work out an eating program.

What benefits can you expect to gain by increasing your water consumption?

A Your skin will improve – water improves the elasticity of your skin. So before you spend thousands at the cosmetic surgeon or you pile on oodles of expensive skin creams, increase your water consumption.
B Your digestive system will improve dramatically. One of the key reasons for constipation is dehydration. Water carries enzymes so your food will be absorbed better when you drink sufficient water.
C You can expect to experience better sleep, greater mental clarity and greater energy.
D Your weight will stabalize
E Your taste buds will alter and you will seek out more hydrating foods as you taste for water increases.

This is the basis of the weight loss program that I am currently designing. It is a program designed to get the body flowing as it was designed to do; anyone would benefit from the program whether they consider themselves overweight or not. Each of us has a desired weight that our bodies will hold when in balance.

So, let’s get drinking more water – starting today!

I am offering a Free 15 minute  Consult to discuss your specific questions regarding this subject. Call me on 425.999.0201 and I will gladly guide you on your optimal health journey!
Most people’s body’s are crying out for water and an incredible book was written some time ago that is a classic called Your Body’s Many Cries for Water”by the late Dr Batmanghelidj.

May your Healthy Cells Lead You to Freedom!   Next time I will share with you an even more important message – getting the water to cross the cell wall, enter your cells and improve cell-to-cell communication.

Are you drinking enough water?

Clare,

I also think it’s very important that if you are drinking lots of water, to make sure that it’s filtered properly!

Hi Jim,
Yes, filtered water. More than than it should be filtered in a way that you know removes all the toxicity found in our water supply. Sad, but true!

Well I have never read anything that makes me want to drink water more than this post and comments!

I am aware that most people are not drinking enough water. I guess if we could all see the damage then this would open peoples eyes to the urgency of drinking enough water.

Thanks for this great post. I must drink more water too!

Clare,
I keep hearing that we need to drink about 8 glasses of water per day – or more. I know I do not reach that amount and I love my coffee. It is so true that drinking an adequate amount of water can actually curb appetite and help you to crave less sugary and fatty foods, as you described them “more hydrating foods.” Thanks for the reminder. I can’t be reminded often enough.

Warmly,

Hi Clare,

Of course this article is spot on. I find it hard to believe how many people count their water intake in coffee and soda pop!

For the record, our daughter, Skye, who is now 6, rarely drinks anything but water. She is very bright and in her first term at school didn’t even get a sniffle.

If we want to move around unaided as we age, and keep doing what we love, it is necessary in my opinion to keep to a natural diet with whole foods and water as the centerpiece.

I take supplements every day as well, and believe in our toxic world (mentally as well as physically) we need extra support in the 21st Century to thrive.

Water indeed, is very important for our body. Most people ten to overlook at this, assuming they have enough liquid in their body just because they drank carbonated drinks, and don’t feel thirsty. I’ve read it somewhere in facebook facts that drinking 1 glass of water first thing in the morning can help lower the risk of heart attack by up to 50%. Thanks for the very informative post!

Awesome article on hydration! Everything you said agrees with what I have been discovering on my own. When I lay off the diet soda and stick to water only, I notice I sleep better, feel better, eat less, and feel skinnier!
Now all I have to do is learn to choose water more often! I believe if a person drank water all day everyday….you could eat almost whatever you want and still lose weight and be healthy. What do you think?

Clare,
This is a great topic for conversation. Most people think cool aid is a substitute for water. That is just crazy based on the facts by leading Dr.s . There is no substitute for water except water.

Hey, watch all the moms who have children playing sports and take turns bringing them to the games. During half-time they load them on soda and other juices. Yet, their bodies need just plan water. They have pumps at all parks for people to enjoy free of charge.

One thing people forgot years ago. Is that the best water is tap. Your body get strength from fighting the chemicals in the tap water. If you go years without it. Then make an attempt to drink it your body does some amazing stuff. Yet, it will get back to the strength of taste and effect of plain good tap water. Most cities have great levels of tap water and I only drink it.

Did you know that all that plastic water is dangerous if it is frozen or hot it releases deadly chemicals which will make you sick and serious health issues. The best thing to do is drink tap water. Never leave a bottle of plastic water in your car a still drink it. Deadly chemicals are waiting for you and will have bad results.

If you want to use a container use a metal one. That is what I use day in and out knowing what I do. I feel it up with tap water and never have to worry of heat or any things else.

Love the post and look forward to more topics which opens my mind to release experiences of mine to share.

Clare, your a great coach in our industry. One I am honored to call a friend. Your doing amazing things here and I will be back to review it all.

Clare, thank you so much for writing this. Last year, while my husband was still deployed to Afghanistan, I had what was probably the worst headache I have ever had. We home school our daughter, and I am the tutor for her age group. Usually, when we leave class, I go get something to eat, but on this one day, I was hurting so badly that I could not even eat. I got home and couldn’t do anything but lie down…and that helped a little. In the back of my mind, I wondered if I needed water, but I was hurting too badly to hold that thought for long. After a couple of hours of total misery, my daughter brought me some water. I drank it and lay back down…and within 10 minutes, that headache was completely GONE!

To this day, I am amazed. I don’t know how long I had not had water, but with hubby’s deployment, I regularly forgot to do important things. From that day on, drinking water was not one of the things I failed to do every day. This article is very important. Thanks for writing!

Hey Clare,

That’s a very sound piece of advice. I’ve always known the benefits of keeping the body hydrated, and do make an effort to drink enough water. But then there are days I must admit, when I err on this. By the end of the day, my thirst increases and I realize I haven’t had enough water which means.

Since, you seem to be an expert on the subject, I’d ask you this. I’ve heard that most of our water requirement should be fulfilled during the day, and the intake should be reduced after sunset. Is this correct? As in my case, I tend to drink a lot of water at night, before going to bed.

Hi Sarah, honestly I don’t know about the day-time drinking theory. Of course, if you read enough experts, you will learn all crazy things about eating, drinking and supplementing. I hope to stick to a common-sense approach for people. The most important aspect of water is making sure you are getting enough. However, I would tell you that drinking a lot of water with your meal is not good. it is much better to drink water 20 minutes before your meal. It will curb your appetite helping with normalizing weight and also allow your enzymes to do their proper job when eating.

Thanks for visiting, I appreciate it. Look out for my articles coming on adrenal fatigue!

The other thing that is recommended is a bit of mineral salt, like sea salt, helps to balance the minerals in your body. It’s a perfect mix for wonderful health.

Hey Clare,

This is a very important subject and everyone needs water in the body. I drink a lot of water everyday :-) I have a flask that energizes the water if I leave it there for 15 mins before I drink it…Clare, I got fantastic results and it works wonder for me. Honestly, just plain water is also good enough too :-) but because I can have immediate result on detoxification, so, I never stop using it and also because I already developed the habit of drinking plenty of water everyday, so, I can choose the type of water for my body :-)

To be quite frank, I can’t drink soda or coke because every time when I drink those drinks, I feel more thirsty. Yes, dehydration can lead to stress and then comes the number one killer disease…’heart attack”…

Clare, you are very kind to share lots of useful information about water and its importance..thanks so much. Glad I stop by now :-) )

Hi Sarah, sparkling water is not as good for you as still room temperature water but if you are choosing between diet sodas and sparkling water, then the sparkling water would be better. Sparkling water can contain high amounts of sodium, which can contribute to high blood pressure. You may experience bloating or gas from drinking it. There are theories out there about calcium leaching from carbonated water and affecting your teeth but nothing conclusive has ever been proven.

Clare I am quite awful at drinking water I must confess.
I take some on a car journey, on the train etc but day in day out I drink coffee and I have found lately that I have become very thirsty often waking in the night due to being thirsty and this can’t be a good sign.

I am taking myself in hand now, some months back my friend Pearly wrote an article about the benefit of drinking water … I started well and slacked off! I’m now back on board!

I’m not a fan of Coke or soda generally but as I say i’m slack with water and I know that’s harmful so I shared this info on my Facebook wall the other day and it’s quite relevant here too…

Oooh la la
WATER or COKE – Can you believe this….?
Not even about the sugar!

WATER
#1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (also applies to half the world population)
#2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is mistaken for hunger.
#3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one’s metabolism as 3%.
#4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.
#5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
#6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
#7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
#8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79% and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water you should drink every day?

COKE
#1. In many states the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.
#2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke and it will be gone in two days.
#3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the ‘real thing’ sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.
#4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.
#5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion. Apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.
#7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.
#8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke into the load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:
#1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric acid also leaches
calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase of osteoporosis.
#2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup! (the concentrate) the commercial trucks must use a hazardous Material place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.
#3. The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean engines of the trucks for about 20 years!

So the question is, would you like a glass of water or Coke? :)

I will be writing about adrenal fatigue next!

I have seen a nail dissolved by Coke!

You hit the spot dead on…I try to drink 120 oz of filtered water each day. What many people do not realize is that soda pop is one of the worst things you can put in your system, between the combination of sugar and sodium. People think that a big soda from 7-11 is going to quench their thirst. They tank up on the sugar and maybe caffeine, along with the sodium. The sodium and caffeine makes you more thirsty, so you drink more…more sugar. The end result…more Diabetes and increase in Triglycerides, along with elevated blood pressure. Thanks for the review.

What a great article, Clare. thank you. I had no idea that lack of hydration caused the cell walls to thicken with cholesterol and from there the nutrients cannot pass through the membranes.

I am wondering if it is possible that people overeat in part because their cells are not getting the nutrients they are in need of. Or at least in the optimum concentration.

I know that coming from a background in teaching, that often kids are trained to not drink water as a crowd control measure and when they do, it is often rationed. Hard to say, if it has a lot to do with the habit of not drinking water, but it sounds kind of interesting to speculate on.

Thanks for a very important and much needed reminder. Admittedly, I’m one of those who doesn’t drink enough water throughout the day, simply because I don’t think about it. I don’t feel thirsty, and so I don’t think to get up, go to the kitchen and get a fresh glass of water. And I agree, tap water is much better than no water at all. In fact, on thing you might touch on in a future post is all the bottled water people are drinking these days. First of all, it’s not regulated, so there’s no guarantee that it’s any better than what’s coming out of your faucet. Second, it just kills me to see all that plastic going into our land fills (if it even makes it that far — much of it ends up on the side of the road, on our beaches, in our rivers, etc). Third, I’ve read a lot about the chemicals that the water absorbs from the plastic — especially after it has sat around for awhile. Ever notice how funny the water tastes coming from a plastic bottle that has been around for awhile? UGH!

Ironically, I’ve been thinking about my low water consumption the last couple of days, so the timing of my reading this post is exactly right. Somebody’s trying to tell me something! :-) Thanks! Now, I better get up and go get that glass of water.

I truly feel sorry for anyone that is depriving themselves of all the water their body needs. I read some stupid study one time in the news that drinking the “recommended” amount of water every day wasn’t so important. I knew intellectually and from my own personal experience that the more water I drink, the better I feel. I don’t like to drink while eating a meal because it’s supposed to dilute the digestive juices!

Hi Claire,

Thanks for sharing this important post on the benefits of drinking water. Actually it made me feel pretty good because I have created a habit of drinking the proper amount of water daily for my body weight. Everything in this article makes sense and it is definitely a “preventative medicine” piece.

It is a shame that so many people are addicted to coffee and soda pop, but it is a fact. A good start to drinking more water is to substitute coffee and pop with water. Unfortunately I see so many children and younger people consuming way too much pop and more teens are starting to drink coffee at an earlier age. I can see there will be consequences in the future as you mentioned.

In your discussion of dehydration, you mentioned that “many emotional issues are resolved too because as the cells start to work more efficiently and the body can detox, it is ridding the body of the negative emotions stored in cell memory.” That is an extremely valuable statement for me. What a comfort to think that if we intake more water, it will help rid negative emotions! Very helpful. Thank you!

This is such important information. Most people aren’t drinking enough water and they think any old beverage will do. Pure water is really important.

Hi Clare,

What an excellent post, confirming what I have known and have been practicing regarding hydration for about 3 years, now.

For some people, proper hydration can be critically important. I have a foster care client who has a seizure disorder, and the #1 way to help prevent seizures in proper hydration. In my clients’ case, this means 3 to 5 liters of water per day (more on the days he drinks soda pop).

Take Care,

David H. Paul

Really fascinating Clare … my former career required pretty much constantly being on the road – either in a car or on a plane. I actually did try to drink enough water and always had a bottle with me – but you know when you have to always worry about where the next bathroom break will be it’s tough. Working at home these days I rarely give that a second though and somedays can’t believe how much water I go through. Thanks for the great information!

Hello Clare

“What is less well-known is how average people like you and me are dehydrated and how we have lost touch with our internal thirst messages.”, is something that I did not know. A few years back I stopped drinking soft drinks and coffee. What about drinking green tea? After reading this one can see the importance of drinking water. Clare a great information post.

Thanks

When I was younger I used to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day and I have gotten away from that. It seems I only drink water at the gym or on the golf course. After reading your article I am going to work on drinking more starting today!

I know I am not drinking as much water as I should, and the sad thing is… I know better. I think every so often I just need a kickstart in the right direction to drink more water…. so your post is definitely a wakeup call.

Clare,
Your post has certainly hit home for me. I am sitting at the computer with a bottle of water nearby – yet the water bottle is just sitting there, as usual. Often, I bring a bottle of water with me, don’t drink it, and then I leave it somewhere without ever drinking it. And I know better. It is really about getting into the habit of drinking water regularly throughout the day.

Thanks for this important reminder. As soon as I started reading your post, I opened the bottle and started drinking the water.

Warmly,

Dr. Erica
