Is your business awake to the social media revolution?

by clare on May 24, 2010

Is your business awake to the social media revolution? As an entrepreneur, I initially approached social media with trepidation. My progress accelerated rapidly as I grasped the enormity of the need to incorporate social media marketing into my overall marketing mix.

However, I became overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information I was bombarded with on a daily basis. Frankly, I couldn’t get why people would want to thrust their latest money-making venture at me on Facebook when they hadn’t even stopped by to say “hello”?

But with time I learned that these people just hadn’t grasped the power of positive social networking and how to use it effectively for their brand or company.

What are the five key factors that you should be aware of before launching your online social marketing strategy?

1 Commitment

There is no law/requirement for you to get involved. If you are going to get involved, you had better be committed. Demonstrating a lack of commitment will do your brand and customer loyalty more damage than no presence at all.

2 Know the soul of your brand

Know how to communicate your brand in a way that people feel it. They require to feel your brand heart. Facts tell, stories sell. So tell your story of your brand and what impact it will make on your target audience. This will bring awareness and sales and loyalty to your brand.

3. Know your target audience

Know who you are aiming your message at. Knowing this will drive your success in online social marketing. You will know where to get involved in the conversation that will bring qualified prospects to your brand. You don’t sell, people will buy from you when they find your brand and it is relevant to what they want and how they feel.

4. Make sure participants representing your brand are passionate about social networking

Participants acting on your brand behalf on social networking sites require to be passionate about the brand because social communication is very human and transparent. Apathy doesn’t cut it here. Just because a member of staff carries a VP title does not give them the right to participate in social media unless they are passionate about this marketing medium and how to use it effectively to communicate and participate in the conversation.

5. Have an online media strategy, vision and action plan and share it with every representative of your organization

Know how you are going to get your target customers to care about your brand. Are you going to run a blog? Who is running it? Everyone in your organization needs to know your online social marketing strategy and vision. Customers can interact with anyone in your organization via social media so it is critical that there is cross-company consistent brand and social media awareness.

So what is the point?

Social networking is so relevant to your brand awareness, sales and customer loyalty today that if you are not participating, in my opinion, the future will be very bleak indeed. Social media is the glue that holds your entire sales and marketing process together. It is the way customers will talk about experiences with your brand between each other and with you. There is no longer business-to-business (B2B) or business-to-customer (B2C) it is rather customer-to-customer (C2C) talking about business (B) and therefore you require to get in the conversation if you truly care about your brand.

I was mentioning before (on another blog) how important it was for traditional business to use that old adage, “Location, location, location”

It was said that wasn't the case anymore when the internet came into being.

But I argue, that we still need to make sure our location is in the minds of our prospects constantly. That's our job as the home-based entrepreneur!

great share clare–i think a lot of us started not understanding how to monetize social media, and began without a plan. soooo important to start with the end in mind!

Clare, when I got to the second paragraph I knew I was reading the words of a winner. You wacked a Homer with this post. Just where did the masses get the idea that selling was so easy that all you need to do is holler “Buy my stuff”. Keep on with this content and maybe some will stumble by and get it. Thanks for post great stuff.

Clare just like you I was a late bloomer to the social networking scene. But now I am loving it. I do agree that it does take some time and effort to get your stride. Once you develop a plan or strategy the results are cumulative

Starting with the end in mind! I was blessed to be influenced by Stephen Covey a couple of decades back and facilitated his “Seven Habits”. It is a part of my DNA today! Thanks for dropping by and for your shout-outs on Twitter!

You are so right about location! I think it is easy to forget fundamentals when new to the internet but fundamentals apply to everything in life!

Hi Clare,

Great post. I believe that once you know who your customers are you need to go where they are and communicate to them in an effective way. This simple marketing concept seems to be lost on many people. They would be so much further ahead if they just stopped and took some time to pay attention to who they where speaking too.

Make it a great day!
God Bless,

Clare,

Oh so true…you sure do know what social media is all about… and how busy it can get! It is amazing how quickly word travels on these social media sites, and how quickly your brand or product can be touted as a must-buy or something to steer clear of. Using social media effectively, through relationships and commitment is definitely how to make it work.

Thanks so much for the words of wisdom,
~ Pat and Lorna

Great stuff Clare. I will certainly refer folks to this article as I think many people do not have a clear path in Social Media (myself sometimes included). I especially like the part about being certain participants representing your brand are passionate about social media.

Knowing why and how to use social media effectively is essential for an online business these days. And, as Dennis Waitley says, “If you're not online you're in the breadline!”
Thank you, Clare, for showing us why using social media is important and how to do so. I especially like your concept of the “soul” of your brand!

Hi Clare,

What a great post… you're right, there is a major shift in the way business is done and social media is the way forward! To not take advantage of the power of social media is folly!

Thank you for sharing such valuable info.

Emma :)

Great content. I always enjoy visiting your blog. I still get overwhelmed by the volume of information on the internet!

Hi Clare,

Such an important message you share here for people. If you are a business, either large or small you need to get on the social media train. Otherwise, just like you said the future is going to look very bleak indeed.

You makes some great points. I totally agreee that committment is the key. Having a half hearted approach to social media is not worth the effort. By being proactive and ever present you will be able to stand out from the crowd and see your personal or business brand rise through the ranks.

Thank you for sharing tip 4, I had a kind of lightbulb moment when I read that one. Iniitally we are tempted to find people who are interested in your business opportunity, product etc, when what we actually should be concentrating on is people who are as passionate about social media as we are.

Thank you for the enlightenment and keep the good stuff rolling.
Beth :)

Hi Clare,
I can relate to what you were saying about your facebook experience. It can be very annoying to be sold to before you even have made a connection.

Love your points. Very helpful description.

To your Success
Yorinda
