Many of us have started a home business coming from a completely different background. Perhaps you have changed from being a corporate executive or you have retired and now want to start something new on the internet, or you are a mom wanting to do something for yourself but keeping your priorities as a parent in place. No matter your reason, unfamiliar territory can create fear which will stop us taking the actions necessary for success.
So what is Fear? Wikipedia states that “fear is an emotional response to a perceived threat. it is a basic survival mechanism occurring in response to a specific stimulus, such as pain or threat of danger.”
So can running a home business be a perceived threat? Hardly. Are you in risk of pain or threat of danger by taking action in your home business? I don’t think so.
So why do we not take the actions necessary that we KNOW we should be taking that will create the very results we are seeking? I know that I am not the only one who struggles with this one – come on admit it!
It is completely irrational. However, so many of us have been told at times in our lives that we are not good enough, not talented enough and there are sub-conscious tapes running telling us that we don’t deserve success. So we allow fear to stand in our way of the result that we ‘know’ we don’t deserve.
Isn’t that crazy? I know that I have been guilty of this very issue.
Fear of rejection is a big one. Irrational, but real. We are fearful that others will reject us and criticize our actions. However, every one of us is unique in our view of the world and the issues within it and therefore our opinions are a reflection of this uniqueness. By putting out our thoughts, we are encouraging discussion which doesn’t necessarily mean that others will agree with us. That is the value of community and open discussion.
So how to Overcome Fear?
1. Take small action steps. Break the tasks down into mini-tasks that seem less daunting. The cumulative effect of taking daily mini-actions will be to forge your business forward. Perhaps it takes a little longer than you desired but you will win.
2. Celebrate every small victory. Decide on something that you are going to reward yourself with – something that you enjoy and stop your work to celebrate your mini-victory. Bring more pleasure into your life and you are sure to create more victories for yourself.
3. Get onto the next mini-task and you are starting to make a habit of action.
4. When you overcome rejection you and you celebrate your small victories, you are on your way to success.
If you still can’t get it going, get yourself a coach and a mentor. Make yourself accountable to this person and allow them to coach you to take action. Success was never achieved alone so find someone who believes in you and your success and who will assist you to get going and overcome the fears that are stopping you from achieving your dreams.

Hey, Clare, great post and super reminders. Little things done consistently over time create success! That's why you are!
Hi Dotti, its the little things that count in the end! Blessings
You are so right Clare. I just posted on my blog, “Don't be afraid to be rich. Don't hold yourself back from your goals because of fears of your own creation.”
I am sure we write so much about ourselves at times……thanks for dropping by!
I do not understand why we can not get out of our own way sometimes!! The “Drunk Monkey” of our mind takes over and causes us to just stop, even if we know better. So, the answer is to just keep moving and push through the fear. Like Guy Finley says:
If you listen carefully, quietly, you'll hear the voice of the moment tell you that all is well and always will be.
Press on my friends….
Kathy
